The settlement dates back over 4,000 years and was the site of an Iron Age fort located at Castle Hill, now a historical landmark with remains of said Iron Age hill fort. There is also evidence of a Roman fort having been here.

Huddersfield has been a market town since Saxon times. The manor of Huddersfield was bought by the Ramsden family, who owned it until 1920. During their time, they supported the town's development. Sir John Ramsden built the Huddersfield Broad canal in 1780, and the Ramsden family championed the railways in the 1840s.

During the Industrial Revolution, Huddersfield had a series of ups and downs. Wars caused a slump in the cloth trade and, along with local crop failure and the new mechanised weaving machines, many weavers faced destitution.

The Luddites were a group who were opposed to the mechanisation of industry as they believed it undermined skilled labourers and drove down wages. They began a rampage destroying mills and machinery. A particularly vicious attack was on Mr Cartwright, a mill owner who was notorious for being cruel to his workers.

The army had to step in after a mill owner and prosecutor against the Luddites was murdered. A campaign from the government stopped the Luddites in their tracks.

After this escapade, parliament began to increase welfare provisions for those who were unemployed and they also introduced laws to improve the conditions in the mills. The town has much Victorian architecture, a good example being the Grade 1 listed railway station that won a Europa Nostra award for architecture.

Huddersfield also has a university and 3 colleges; thus a large student population. It is also the birthplace of Rugby league which originated in 1895.

Girlie Show

Rayne, 55 is a transsexual escort who has been escorting for 5 years: “I changed gender quite late in life due to being married and my wife not understanding who or what I was. I decided I needed to be me before I die, so I got divorced and began my transition.” Rayne began escorting to pay for her surgery: “Surgery isn't cheap and I wanted to go somewhere in England. You hear so many horror stories from people who have gone abroad and a lot of the time they keep you there for a week after your surgery as more often than not there are complications. At least if there is a problem in England you are only a car ride away. Luckily I had no problems with my surgery.” Rayne chose not to get a full sex change claiming clients like her c**k and t**s: “A c**k in their a**e and t**s on their back is what a lot of them want. It doesn't mean that they are gay if they're f****d by a trans girl, they just like a woman with a bit extra. I am versatile so I take and give.”

Rayne did have a trans friend who was also an escort and who had a full sex change and her clients dried up: “She was just like other girls then, the taboo and kinkiness of it was gone.” Rayne continues to escort because she finds it difficult to get a “normal” job and she admits she would miss the good wages: “ Because of my age and the fact that I'm transgender with big boobs and tattoos, noone is going to employ me; I'm too outrageous and there is double the stigma of both being trans and an escort. Neither of these things sit well with people. I'm also used to the money, I don't think I could work for minimum wage after what I've been earning.” Rayne chooses to do outcalls and also has security with her wherever she goes. She is also married to a genetic woman who is also an escort: “My wife says our home is our safe space and we wouldn't want clients knowing where we live. Sometimes we do duos.A lot of men get off on watching a trans woman f**k a genetic girl. I like it when we work together; we keep each other safe.”

Rayne doesn't speak to her family since she changed gender as a lot of them can't accept it: “As long as my wife and I have each other, I don't care about my family. She is estranged from her family too. They don't understand how a girl can be in love with a trans woman. I dread to think what they'd say if they found out we were both escorts.”

Rayne and her wife like escorting since they can be independent and earn enough to enable them to have a life and more time together instead of working 24/7: “People who know us find what we do strange, but it's none of their business. As long as we are safe that's all that matters.”

Rayne has suffered with hate crime (see next section) due to being transgender but luckily she has had all respectful and kind clients when she's been escorting: “If people are looking specifically for a trans escort, they aren't going to give me any trouble. I get a lot of men who have always wanted to try it with a trans girl and most of these are usually very shy and nervous. I always start with some conversation and make a cuppa if they want one, just to break the ice and get them comfortable. My sessions are mainly oral and sex; I don't do any hard fetishes. In essence I'm the fetish. They are psyched up enough that I'm trans without anything else. If I'm doing a duo with my wife, she sometimes incorporates tie and tease, as her services include more hardcore elements.”

So what does the future hold for them? “We are happy as we are for now but obviously we don't want to be doing it forever. Escorting is the best paid, most flexible job that there is out there at the moment. If we win the lottery then that's a different story.”

Overcoming Hate

Rayne, when she first changed gender, was the victim of a serious hate crime: “I had bricks thrown through my window and my door sprayed. The police gave me a panic button in case I was in danger to alert them to get to me. They also did a kind of stakeout, but they never caught the culprit. I found the police at the time to be very uneducated about trans people and I must have had the whole force coming to my house at one time or another, repeatedly asking me the same questions just to ogle at me. One even said that they didn't understand what I was. I eventually moved house and when I met my wife I was going through a serious breakdown. She has been the best thing that has happened to me in terms of making me a stronger person and

able to stand up to adversity. No matter who you are, you should never feel frightened to live your life as you want. It is no one else's concern.”
